Buying guide

Ring lights

$86

Neewer RL-18II

Who knows how long the cheap plastic build on this thing will last, but in the meantime, we find ourselves grabbing it allll the time.

It's lightweight, gets really bright, and is just so dang convenient.

$139

IVISII ring light

This light changes colors, has two extra mounting spots, and even includes a tablet mount.

It can also be powered by batteries so you can film anywhere, and its built-in USB port lets you charge your phone while filming.

This review video covers the pros and cons.

$180

Wescott ring light

This light has a better build quality, with a sturdier swivel mount for heavier cameras.

It also has an extra mounting spot and can be battery-powered.

Umbrella lights

$160

Westcott two-light umbrella kit

The fact that this kit includes two lights means you'll be able to create all sorts of lighting setups. Use one for your key and another for a fill or hair light, for example.

These lights also pack in a lot of brightness for the price. Plus, they come with a remote control and a one-year warranty.

$127

GVM 1-light umbrella kit

This light comes with a reflective dish that makes it useful even without an umbrella (like for a hair light).

Its popular Bowens mount also makes it easily upgradable and adapatble, letting you add a soft box dome or other accessories later if you want.

Soft box lights

$159

GVM soft box light kit

Reviewers say they’re glad they bought this instead of the other (pricier) option because of its beautiful light quality. Sure, the stand has a cheap build, but it's lightweight and easy to replace.

The soft box dome is a smaller size, but it's a compact setup and you can also upgrade to a bigger soft box if you want.

Here's a nice unboxing video if you're interested.

$745 light + $219 soft box

Aputure 120D with soft box

This über-popular light is very bright with a big ol' soft box, meaning you can use it to light up a whole room if you need.

It's got excellent build quality, a sturdy bag, a nice remote, and a reflective dish that'll let you use it without a soft box.

The biggest downsides are the price (though you could pair it with a cheaper soft box) and the fact that it's a heavy load to move around.

Accent lights

$10

Neewer color filters

Changing the color of your lights is as simple as taping one of these eight transparent filters in front.

Just don't get too close to the bulb unless you like melted plastic.

$374

CAME-TV LED spotlight

This compact, but powerful spotlight makes a perfect background or hair accent.

We love that we can focus it right where we want by zooming in or adjusting the barn doors.
